Late guns have a riveted plate on each side of the slide bearing the inscription and slide serrations. Four small guide ribs are punched into the slide from the outside, two on each side-these ribs fit into grooves in the top of the frame in which the slide moves. The slide holds the breech block, which is fixed by inductive soldering, as well as the breech block plate, firing pin and firing pin spring, safety lever, ejector and sights. Early slides differ slightly from later ones. The slide of the HK4 is made out of sheet steel, formed in a mold under high pressure, with front and rear plates welded in, and machined afterward. The gun consists of four main components: slide, barrel and recoil spring assembly, frame, and magazine. Its name is derived from the tool-free interchangeability of the four barrels in calibers 9mm Browning Short, 7.65mm Browning, 6. The HK4 is a blow-back operated unlocked-breech semiautomatic pistol with a double-action trigger and an external hammer.
